During slavery, workers were allowed to sing songs during their working time and during the Underground Railroad the songs helped slaves to run to freedom.
Apparition Church of God in Christ (COGIC) with deep influence of African traditions such as shouts, hand clapping, foot-stomping and jubilee songs.
During the Black Renaissance, songs were put forward and started to be inspired by bible verses and daily life events, giving birth to a new type of Christian songs.
Gospel.Black: a confluence of sacred hymns, spirituals, shouts and black devotional songs with noticeable blues and jazz rhythmic and harmonic influences performed in a variety of vocal settings such as solo, duet, choir, ensemble all with instrumental accompaniment.
